What is Xenical?

Xenical (orlistat) is a prescription medication (orlistat brand) used for the treatment of obesity. It is not known if Xenical works or helps reduce caloric intake.

Xenical works by preventing the absorption of about 30% of the fat you eat from being caught in the stomach. However, this undetermined agent may also decrease food intake by about 10%.

This drug may decrease the amount of certain natural products, including the flavor of this drug. Please keep a record of all your medical/dental/orthopedic consultations.

This drug may cause blurred vision or may cause vision loss in both eyes (NAION). Stop taking this drug and contact your healthcare provider right away if you have NAION-NAION. NAION is a serious condition that can be fatal. It is extremely rare that NAION is caused by a certain pregnancy or childbirth.

This drug may cause abdominal pain, bloating, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, or constipation. Your healthcare provider may want to see if this drug is safe for you to take. If you have nausea, vomiting, bloating, weight loss, dizziness, or constipation, talk to your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider may want to talk to your doctor about possible drug interactions or if you have liver disease. If you have any other medical conditions, especially if they are affecting you, your healthcare provider may want to discuss other treatment options for you.

This drug may cause the following symptoms: blurred vision; decreased appetite; nausea; weight loss; yellowing of your eyes/skin (jaundice); or dark urine. This drug may increase the activity of certain enzymes (lipases) in the body, which may cause an increase in blood sugar (hyperglycemia). If you have diabetes, you may have an increased risk of blood glucose (hyperglycemia). If you are overweight (body mass index of 27 kg/m2 or above) or are on medications that affect blood sugar (insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, migraine, asthma), you may have more risk factors for hyperglycemia (BMI >35 kg/m²). You may need to take this drug along with meals containing fat, to control your weight. Do not stop taking this drug until you have discussed the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

This drug may cause your blood sugar to rise (hypoglycemia). You may have a serious infection in the stomach or intestines, which may cause you to eat or drink alcohol while taking this drug.
